Pain Management Techniques After Surgery

Palliative Care Methods for Controlling Pain

palliative care is used to manage a disease or medical condition that is serious or life threatening by easing pain and other associated physical, emotional, or psychosocial symptoms

Palliative care also eases other distressing symptoms, like depression, anxiety, fatigue, insomnia, and shortness of breath. Palliative care provides advanced care planning and a support system to help you live a life that is as active, fulfilling, and as pain-free as possible.

Principles of palliative care and pain medicine

The first step in managing pain is to do a total pain assessment. You may be asked to choose a number from 0 to 10 to rank your pain, with 0 being very mild pain and 10 being the worst possible pain you could have.

Understanding opioid drugs

Opioid drugs are the most effective and commonly used drugs for moderate to severe pain. A wide range of opioid drugs is available, and they can be taken in a variety of ways. One drawback of these medicines is that, over time, you will almost certainly develop a tolerance to the one you’re taking and need higher doses to get the same effect. One way your healthcare provider may get around this problem is by switching the type, dose, or the way the drug is given.

Understanding helper drugs

These medicines, called adjuvant analgesics, can help control pain in certain situations.

How to properly manage patients’ pain

One recent evening in Denver, a man known to EMS to have a history of drug abuse was brought by ambulance to Denver General Hospital after being hit by a car. A bone in his arm was poking through his skin, but paramedics didn’t give him pain medication. “We’re familiar with him. He likes his drugs,” Christopher Colwell, M.D., an emergency physician and medical director for the Denver Fire Department and Denver Health Paramedic Division, recalls medics telling him

Colwell was appalled. The man was obviously in severe pain, yet he was being denied relief because of his drug dependency status. “It was astounding. Here was someone with a bone sticking out of his arm, whose pain should have been treated,” he says. “Yet medics were not able to step out of that and treat the patient based on his current situation rather than his history.”

Relieving pain becomes a priority

For a condition as uncomfortable and as universal as pain, it took until the mid-’90s for pain management to become a priority in hospitals. “At the time, we were really coming to full recognition of how poorly we were doing in managing patients’ pain,” says Bob Twillman, Ph.D., director of policy and advocacy for the American Academy of Pain Management in Sonora, Calif.

Research papers showed that patients with poorly treated pain were more likely to end up with chronic pain conditions, post-traumatic stress, depression, and other physical and psychological problems, while other research showed that proper pain management could help with wound healing and get people home from the hospital sooner, Twillman says. At the same time, new pharmaceuticals came on the market, providing alternative pain-relief options. “Prior to the mid-’90s, we had oxycodone (Percocet) and hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lortab) and only one long-acting opioid—morphine,” Twillman says. “But then fentanyl patches and Oxycontin became available. We had a lot more options for treating people not just with acute pain, but with longstanding pain related to cancer or other pain conditions.”

Responders reluctant to give drugs

Even as hospitals worked to better manage pain, awareness of the importance of pain management in the prehospital setting lagged. EMS has no pain-management standards as part of accreditation. (The Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services, or CAAS, doesn’t include a pain-management standard as part of its clinical assessment.) Nor is pain management a major part of EMS education, Taigman says. Sure, pain medications are touched on. But there are no long discussions about the role of the prehospital care provider in treating pain. “There’s a long module on reading EKGs, a super long module on trauma assessment and management, but there’s no module on pain management,” he says.

How to Choose the Best Over-the-Counter Pain Medicine

Pain is one of the most challenging symptoms to treat. It can be caused by many different things such as heat, cold, pressure, traction, inflammation, and nerve damage. Over-the-counter (OTC) pain medicines offer a wide variety of treatment options for the various types of pain. It’s important to understand the cause of your pain in order to choose the best medicine(s) to treat it. I’ll review some of the most common types of pain, and explain which active ingredients are best suited to provide relief.

Headaches & Migraines

Believe it or not, doctors are still not completely sure what causes headaches. The Mayo Clinic notes, “Chemical activity in your brain, the nerves or blood vessels of your head outside your skull, or muscles of your head and neck — or some combination of these factors — may play a role in primary headaches.”

The most common kind of headache is known as a “tension headache” and as the name suggests, it often feels like a tight band around your head. Asprin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and acetaminophen all are effective to treat tension headaches, but it’s important not to overuse OTC headache medicines or else you may experience headaches from the medicines themselves. According to physician resource Up to Date, “over-use headaches” can occur if you use these medicines for more than nine days over the course of a month.

Arthritis Pain

Arthritis literally means “joint inflammation” and it is one of the most common causes of pain experienced by adults. Most arthritis is due to normal “wear-and-tear” on joints and is known as osteoarthritis. There are less common types of arthritis that are caused by an autoimmune reaction to joint tissues (such as rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis).

Muscle Pain

Muscle pain is usually caused by micro-tears in muscle fibers that stimulate nerve endings in the surrounding tissues. Nerve endings that sense inflammation, stretch and pressure exist near muscle tissue and their messages are usually perceived by the brain as dull, aching pain sensations. People experience muscle pain most commonly after exertion or exercise. In addition to oral anti-inflammatory medicines, acetaminophen, and NSAIDs, many OTC muscle pain treatments involve the application of heat, or superficial cooling and anti-inflammatory creams. The active ingredients in topical consumer products that have been found to be helpful in easing muscle pain and soreness are: menthol, camphor, methyl salicylate, capsaicin, heat wraps, and cold packs.

Pain Management During End-of-life

Understanding Pain During End-of-life

Unfortunately, what should be a time to spend with loved ones is all too often accompanied by severe pain. To give just one example, a report published in the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Care revealed that for over 50% of patients with terminal cancer, their pain is managed insufficiently. Especially at the end of life, serious pain is an unnecessary distraction which can rob terminal patients of precious time with the people who they value the most

Understanding Pain Management

Pain management and palliative care has advanced greatly over the past few decades and this no longer needs to be the case. June Dahl, PhD, a professor of pharmacology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a founder of the American Alliance of Cancer Pain Initiatives says that over 90% and perhaps as many as 95% of terminal patients should be able to be given a significant amount of relief from their pain. While Dahl says that eliminating pain completely isn’t realistic, it is realistic for patients to expect that their pain can be minimized to the point that it could be described as 2 or 3 on a scale of 0 to 10.

Managing Pain

Pain relief should always be one of the top priorities in the treatment of terminal patients. Too much emphasis on treating other symptoms or the underlying disease in the face of a poor prognosis can mean that terminal patients will have to wait needlessly to receive hospice care and to benefit from a more aggressive pain management strategy

Where Support Is Provided

Terminally ill patients may receive hospice care in a dedicated hospice facility or, as is increasingly the case, in their own home, where patients may feel more at ease. Hospice care is provided by a team which includes doctors, nurses, physician assistants, therapists and chaplains make regular visits to the patient in their home and give instruction to family members and other caregivers on administering pain medications and comforting the patient. These hospice care specialists have also been trained on assisting patients and their loved ones to handle the emotional and mental toll of dealing with a terminal illness and end of life

Complications of Pain Management

Even with regular administration of pain medication, terminal patients may still need higher dosages at times or a change in their medication routine in order to manage their pain. Caregivers need to monitor the pain of their loved ones by asking the patient regularly about their pain and react appropriately. Pain can quickly become acute at the end of life and patients may not always volunteer this information, so it becomes especially important for caregivers to ask this important question regularly.

All You Need to Know About Pain Management in Hospice

When faced with a serious illness, patients are accustomed to seeking out the support of a specialist. Facing heart disease, patients want a well-trained cardiologist by their side. When diagnosing a particular type of cancer, a primary care physician will refer their patient to an oncologist with expertise in that area. For terminally ill patients, Crossroads Hospice & Palliative Care is the comfort care specialist patients need to control pain and other end-of-life symptoms.

Hospice Pain Management

Pain management is one of the primary goals of hospice care – keeping the patient comfortable and managing symptoms to ensure they have the highest quality of life for as long as they live.

Signs and Symptoms of Pain

While many patients can assess and communicate their pain levels, other patients can sometimes believe that admitting pain makes them appear weak – which is not true. In other cases, Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia make it difficult for individuals to communicate their needs. In any case, caregivers should keep an eye out for signs and symptoms that indicate their loved one is in pain.

Hospice Pain Medication Protocol

Medication is an essential tool in hospice pain management. This includes the use of opioids to control pain. Opioids work by attaching themselves to “opioid receptors” in the brain, blocking the feeling of pain. They are used to treat moderate to severe pain

Managing Emotional and Spiritual Pain

In addition to managing physical pain, the hospice pain management plan will assess the patient’s emotional and spiritual pain.

Why Use A Wedding Dj

How to choose the perfect DJ for your Wedding as a Newly Engaged couple

I’m engaged! Now what!?

You’re engaged to be married – congratulations! What an exciting, joyous and (slightly) nerve-racking time you’ve got ahead of you. So much stuff to sort out and so many aspects of your wedding to meticulously plan. Where on earth should you start!?

How much does a wedding DJ cost?

Now, one of the first questions happy couples have when they’re planning their wedding is ‘how much does a wedding DJ cost?’ And the answer is ‘it depends’. It depends on whether you simply want someone to show up and play some tunes, or you want a well-rounded, professional partner who’s going to work with you to ensure your big day is absolutely perfect.

Budget DJ:

Experience: Pub & Social Club gigs

Commitment: Part Time DJ and Agency Work

Online Presence: Facebook page

Communication via: Email

Specialist Wedding DJ:

Experience: Multiple Weddings throughout the year

Commitment: Full Time

Online Presence: Professional Website, Facebook, Youtube & Instagram

Communication via: Willing to meetup in person, or via Facetime etc.

Reviews: Multiple website, Facebook and/or Google reviews

Awards: Perhaps 1 or 2 Wedding Industry Awards

At the end of the day, you need to ask yourself how important a role is your wedding entertainment going to play in the overall success of your big day? Then, decide how much value it’s going to add and how much pressure it’s going to relieve if you hire an elite wedding DJ who’s more than willing to help you with numerous aspects of your planning.

Of course, your available budget is going to be a significant factor when choosing a wedding DJ, but please don’t underestimate the extra value a true pro can bring to the party.

How to Choose a Wedding DJ

Choosing a wedding DJ is an important decision because music sets the mood for the event. Making sure that he or she is a professional is not enough. If you have different taste in music and just don’t click, you won’t work well together. Here are some tips for choosing a wedding DJ. Use referrals. Googling DJs that work in your area is the easiest approach to the task, but how can you be sure that DJs you’ve found are actually good? We recommend that you ask friends and relatives who have recently had or attended a wedding for recommendations. Of course, you should to ask people whom you really trust.

Consider your budget. As with any other wedding professional, there are expensive DJs and relatively cheap DJs. Think about how much you are ready to pay the DJ and stick to your wedding budget. We are sure you will be able to find good DJ within your preferable price range. However, we will recommend against choosing the cheapest one. If the price is too low, it is suspicious

Do your research. Many DJs have a page on SoundCloud.com and/or upload videos of their gigs on YouTube. You absolutely should check them out. And don’t forget to Google some client reviews and references.

Meet them in person. Once you’ve narrowed down the list of potential candidates, you need to meet and interview each of them before making the final decision. Before making an appointment, make sure the DJ is available on your wedding date. If not, there is no point in meeting them

Trust your instincts. Experience and professionalism are important, but they are not the only thing that matters. Every DJ has their own personal style. You need to make sure that his or her style is compatible with your and your guests’ tastes. If you really like the DJ even though they don’t have much experience or stellar recommendations, go with him or her. Gut feelings rarely lie

Don’t take their word for it. Ask around!

Wedding DJs and entertainers are just like any other business out there: they do well to talk themselves up to their customers and clients.

Make sure they’ll take requests

When it comes to hiring a wedding DJ in the DC area, requests shouldn’t be a problem. But they become a bit more complicated if you hire a live band.

How to Hire a Disc Jockey for Your Wedding

A DJ is a crucial ingredient to a wedding as they can make your reception enjoyable and memorable through their ability to entertain guests at your reception through skillful playing of different kinds of music. The goal of this article is to guide you through everything that needs to be considered when hiring a DJ for your important day.

Being Prepared

Get all your needs sorted with respect to the wedding. Establish the venue of the wedding, the date on which the wedding will take place and the length of time the disc jockey will be expected to play. This information is crucial to knowing the costs involved. In terms of the venue, it is always preferable to know the estimated size of the venue

Establish the theme of the wedding. If possible, get some input from the wedding couple and planner on the theme, mood or intended feel of the wedding. This will give you an idea of the preferred DJs.

Choosing a DJ

Compile a list of possible DJ choices. Use the internet, yellow pages, bridal shows, or get the names of some DJs who performed at your friends’ or relatives’ weddings who did a good job.

How to Choose Between a Wedding DJ or Live Band

So you’re working your way through your wedding checklist, and have reached the point where you have to make the difficult decision between hiring a DJ or live band to get the party started at your wedding reception.

DJ vs. Live Band

There are a few things to consider when making this important decision. We’ll go through the factors we think are most crucial to help you decide, but here’s a quick summary to get you started

Think about your Budget

You always need to keep your budget firmly in mind when planning any event, and especially one that can be as expensive as a wedding. So don’t forget to think about the cost first when deciding if you should hire a live band or DJ for your wedding reception.

Consider the Space

You’ll also need to think about the area you have available for your wedding music entertainment.

Create the Perfect Vibe

If your choice between a DJ or a live band is not limited by your venue size or budget, then have a think about which option will create the perfect vibe.

What Is A Checking Accountant

Branch Accounting – Understanding the Basics

Branch or Agency?

Depending on its objectives, the enterprise may adopt the form of either a branch or an agency. Both are part of a central organization and while they conduct operations away from their home office, they are not a separate legal entity from the latter.

The key difference between the two lies in their degree of autonomy or independence. For instance, a sales agency typically does not stock inventory, but only displays merchandise, takes orders and arranges for delivery of the merchandise. In other words, the agency merely acts on behalf of the home office (H.O.), with the latter handling the other aspects of operations such as purchase of merchandise, advertising, and granting of credit.

The branch, however, has a greater degree of autonomy and thus operates more independently of the home office than the agency, primarily in the following aspects:

  • Provision of a wider range of services to customers or clientele
  • Exercise of greater management decision-making
  • Handling of more aspects of business operations, such as stocking of inventory, filling of customers’ orders, credit and collection
  • Maintenance of a separate accounting system

Branch Accounting System

A business is often separated into a number of different branches each of which is treated as its own profit center. Branch accounting allows the business to prepare branch trading and profit and loss accounts in order that it can assess the profitability of each of these branches.

The advantages of branch accounting are that the business is able to identify the financial performance of each of its branches. By making comparisons it can identify inefficient branches and make informed managerial decisions about their future. In addition managers and staff can be given responsibility and motivated and rewarded on the basis of branch performance.

It should be noted that branches differ from departments in that they are operated from different locations; for example a retail business might have branches in different cities. In contrast departments are usually operated from the same location.

Types of Accounting / Branches of Accounting

As a result of economic, industrial, and technological developments, different specialized fields in accounting have emerged.

The famous branches or types of accounting include: financial accounting, managerial accounting, cost accounting, auditing, taxation, AIS, fiduciary, and forensic accounting.

  1. Financial Accounting

Financial accounting involves recording and classifying business transactions, and preparing and presenting financial statements to be used by internal and external users.

In the preparation of financial statements, strict compliance with generally accepted accounting principles or GAAP is observed. Financial accounting is primarily concerned in processing historical data.

  1. Managerial Accounting

Managerial or management accounting focuses on providing information for use by internal users, the management. This branch deals with the needs of the management rather than strict compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.

Managerial accounting involves financial analysis, budgeting and forecasting, cost analysis, evaluation of business decisions, and similar areas.

  1. Cost Accounting

Often times considered as a subset of management accounting, cost accounting refers to the recording, presentation, and analysis of manufacturing costs. Cost accounting is very useful in manufacturing businesses since they have the most complicated costing process.

Cost accountants also analyze actual costs versus budgets or standards to help determine future courses of action regarding the company’s cost management.

  1. Auditing

External auditing refers to the examination of financial statements by an independent party with the purpose of expressing an opinion as to fairness of presentation and compliance with GAAP. Internal auditing focuses on evaluating the adequacy of a company’s internal control structure by testing segregation of duties, policies and procedures, degrees of authorization, and other controls implemented by management.

  1. Tax Accounting

Tax accounting helps clients follow rules set by tax authorities. It includes tax planning and preparation of tax returns. It also involves determination of income tax and other taxes, tax advisory services such as ways to minimize taxes legally, evaluation of the consequences of tax decisions, and other tax-related matters.

  1. Accounting Information Systems

Accounting information systems (AIS) involves the development, installation, implementation, and monitoring of accounting procedures and systems used in the accounting process. It includes the employment of business forms, accounting personnel direction, and software management.

  1. Fiduciary Accounting

Fiduciary accounting involves handling of accounts managed by a person entrusted with the custody and management of property of or for the benefit of another person. Examples of fiduciary accounting include trust accounting, receivership, and estate accounting.

  1. Forensic Accounting

Forensic accounting involves court and litigation cases, fraud investigation, claims and dispute resolution, and other areas that involve legal matters. This is one of the popular trends in accounting today.

Types of Branches

Branches can be classified into two types.

  1. Dependent Branches

The term dependent branch means a branch that does not maintain its own set of books. All records have to be maintained by the head office in case of a dependent branch.

Thus, The head office may keep accounts of the branch according to any of the following methods:

  • Debtors System.
  • Stock and Debtors system.
  • Final Accounting System.
  • Wholesale Branch system.
  1. Independent Branch

An independent branch means a branch, which maintains its own set of books. Such a branch can either be a home branch or a foreign branch.

The method of according is the same in both the case except that in case of a foreign branch, The trial balance sent by the foreign branch is to be converted into the currency of the country of the Head Office.

(A). Home Branch

Such a branch keeps a complete set of its books. It may also purchase goods from outside parties besides receiving goods from the head office.

It prepares its own trial balance and final accounts and sends its copies to the head office for their incorporation in the head office books. Thus, It maintains a head office account in its books this is of the nature of a personal account.

(B). Foreign Branch

In the case of a foreign branch, the accounting procedure is the same as in the case of a Home Branch.

On receipt of the trial balance from the foreign branch, the head office will scrutinize it and pass necessary entries for goods in transit, for cash in transit and other adjustments as may be necessary.

5 Accounting Principles

Accounting principles are essential rules and concepts that govern the field of accounting, and guides the accounting process should record, analyze, verify and report the financial position of the business.

Accounting principles are the foundation of accounting according to GAAP.

These principles are used in every step of the accounting process for the proper representation of the financial position of the business.

5 principles of accounting are;

  1. Revenue Recognition Principle,
  2. Historical Cost Principle,
  3. Matching Principle,
  4. Full Disclosure Principle, and
  5. Objectivity Principle.

Home Information Packing Services Explained From The Point Of View Of A Conveyancing Solicitor

WHAT IS PICK AND PACK?

Your logistics company undoubtedly has a supply-chain management. This allows your services and goods to move from supplier or retailer and into the hands of your customers. This is known as the supply chain.

Pick and pack is a part of the greater supply-chain management. It’s one cog in the wheel that keeps the whole thing moving flawlessly. This order fulfillment is popular among eCommerce or Internet brands that have customers all over the world. That’s because of the way items are prepared, which is hinted at in the name.

With pick and pack logistics, the warehouse employees at the eCommerce company will work from master cartons. There will be many of these cartons on each shelf of a warehouse. The workers will take the relevant items from each master carton. This is the picking part of pick and pack.

BENEFITS OF PICK AND PACK

International Forwarding (IFL) has many customers who take advantage of our experienced pick and pack fulfilment services. Goods are stored in our secure warehouse facilities at competitive rates and individual orders can be shipped directly to your customers from there. Tailored inventory reports are available and all consignments benefit from our online track-and-trace systems. We can also supply pallets and other types of packaging to suit individual requirements.

If you’re thinking of using a pick and pack service, here are some of the main advantages:

  1. SAVES TIME

Turning your consignments into orders that are ready for shipping to customers takes time and care. Outsourcing order fulfilment to trained experts in picking and packing means you can get on with your business and let them get on with the work.

  1. SAVES ON STORAGE COSTS

At IFL, items can easily and securely be stored at our warehouse, ready for pick, pack and dispatch at the right time to suit you.

  1. PERSONALISATION

We work with many brands who have been pleasantly surprised at how our expert picker packers can work to often quite specific requirements for fulfilment and onward distribution. We can often integrate their system into our warehouse systems.

  1. FLEXIBILITY

If you’re using one company for freight forwarding, it’s much easier to use the same company for logistics and cargo handling. Look for a company that offers such flexibility and is willing to work with you to get this part of your supply chain right – and it means you’ll only have to deal with one supplier.

  1. TAKES THE PAIN OUT OF THE SUPPLY CHAIN

A more efficient supply chain is in everyone’s interest and can help you manage your resources better. It particularly suits small and medium-sized enterprises. Pick and pack is just part of our suite of cargo handling and supply chain solutions.

Types of Picking and Packing Methods in a Warehouse

There is a range of different picking methods utilised by order fulfilment hubs, which depending on the size and type of your business may work for you. Take a look at these different methods which may improve the quality and productivity of your supply chain.

Discrete Order Picking

The simplest method of picking and probably the most common. It requires an individual to pick a single order, one at a time as and when they receive it. However, though this method is uncomplicated and easy to employ it is not time efficient and so would be best suited to smaller warehouses.

Batch Picking

As the name suggests, this requires the order fulfiller to pick multiple orders at one time. While it still requires workers to choose items for an individual mandate, it is more efficient than discrete order picking as it reduces travelling time, especially if the orders required share the same or similar SKUs. This method is often employed in warehouses with larger e-commerce activity. However, unless the order-picker has access to automated picking services such as a conveyor belt or a forklift, this method can be ineffective if the customer orders are physically large or heavy.

Zone Picking

This method requires the warehouse to be divided into several zones, of which order-pickers are then explicitly assigned. Order-pickers are then responsible for picking and packing SKUs within these designated zones. If there is an order with multiple items, employees in each zone will pass packages to one another until the final product has been packed. The packing This method is more efficient than both discrete order picking and batch picking but only allows for one scheduling period per shift. Meaning that if the worker finishes their turn and there is no-one on shift after them, orders are placed into the queue until the following change.

Wave Picking

This is another commonly used method in order fulfilment warehouses. It is similar to discrete order picking in the sense that one order is being pulled at a time by the order-picker, but unlike discrete order picking, wave picking has a scheduling window. This method helps to increase time efficiency and maximise productivity within the pick and pack company by scheduling picking at the most appropriate times of the day. There are other methods used in warehouses which have also proved to be successful, such as multi-batch picking, or zone-batch-wave picking, but those mentioned above are the most commonly used.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF WAREHOUSE PICKING?

Many industries stand to benefit from a bonded warehousing pick and pack service, including retailers, manufacturers and eCommerce stores. Just some of these benefits include…

  • Fast delivery: Being able to offer customers and clients fast and efficient delivery services will make them more likely to place an order with a business.
  • Positive reputation: If a customer has a positive delivery experience they are not only more likely to become a repeat customer but they will begin to further associate the company with reliability and dependability.
  • Stock management: Having a dedicated pick and pack service ensures inventory data is constantly updated. This ensures any bulk orders made can be fulfilled, as the company will have a clear idea of the stock they have available.
  • Stock protection: Storing your stock in a bonded warehouse ensures it can be stored safely. During a pick and pack service, the warehouse team will be able to identify any anomalies in stock, should they occur, preventing customers from receiving sub-par products.

Why would a company take advantage of pick and pack services?

Unless you’re a retail behemoth like Amazon, operating your own pick and pack operation can be very costly and time consuming. Outsourcing to a warehouse eliminates the need for individual businesses to invest in or maintain their own warehouse space (and the workforce to manage it). With the help of an outside logistics specialist, you can focus on your core competencies without the additional stress of managing every moving part of your own supply chain. Using sophisticated inventory management software, a company like Commercial Warehousing can keep a constant eye on stock levels and guarantee prompt delivery to your customers.

Pick and pack services are especially advantageous for smaller companies. Large warehouses receive more comfortable shipping rates because of their high volume of orders. They also have their own customer service teams who specialize in shipping. So if you’re running a small business, a third party pick and pack service can allow you to offer the same level of service, security and shipping speed as a larger competitor.

Ultimately, pick and pack services help ensure that customers receive their orders intact and on time. And since how your product arrives can determine how much trust your customers place in your company, choosing a responsible, hardworking warehousing company can be one of the most important business decisions you make.

Hydro Jetting Service To Solve Plumbing Issues

Snaking vs Hydro Jetting: Which Drain Cleaning Should You Choose?

It’s important that your home’s water pipes work well at all times. These pipes are responsible for moving waste and dirty water away from your home. Unfortunately, when pipes get blocked, they can’t do their jobs. This has serious consequences for a residential plumbing system. If your home is experiencing problems with clogged pipes, you have two options: hydro-jet cleaning or snaking.

What Is Hydro-jet Cleaning?

Hydro-jetting, also referred to as water-jetting, is a specialized cleaning solution for drain and sewer pipes. It uses a high-pressure hose that has a special nozzle affixed on the end. The hose itself connects to a machine that directs pressurized water through the nozzle to clean and clear out congested sewer pipes.

Is Hydro-jetting Recommended for All Drain Clogs?

Some pipes aren’t strong enough to handle the force of hydro-jetting. In these cases, using a drain snake is better. Drain snake service uses a cable machine to clear clogs and is an affordable option. Hydro-jetting is best for serious clogs such as when there are tree roots in the sewer line or there is a massive clog that won’t respond to other methods.

Benefits of Hydro-jetting Service

Blocked sewer lines put the drains inside your home at risk of backing up and overflowing. Like it or not, the sewer pipes on your property are your responsibility to maintain. The easiest and most effective way to do this is to use hydro-jetting to clear serious clogs. The reason this method is popular and so effective is that it’s able to cut through virtually anything including wood, dried concrete, grease clinging to pipes, and those pesky tree roots. The pressurized water is powerful enough to pulverize nearly any material and wash it away and out of the pipe. Another benefit of hydro-jetting is that it cleans pipes thoroughly, leaving the pipes crystal clear and ready to stave off future clogs.

Benefits of the Drain Snake

The drain snake is a great option for small clogs that haven’t made it past the trap and deep into the line. It’s also a good option for homeowners who want to try to clear a clog before calling for professional drain cleaning services. Drain snakes, or hand augers, are available at home improvement stores and are a cost-effective, easy-to-use option for the average person

Top Tips For Best Services in Hydro Jetting

Be it your residence or your commercial complex, you inevitably have a complex series of drain pipes. As the name tells, these pipes carry dirty water and other waste materials that increase the chance of getting these pipes clogged. Such situation can lead to severe situations that your residence or commercial property cannot tolerate. Obviously, it requires the best services to remove the wastes and keep the pipe clear and free-flowing.

What is Hydro Jetting?

As far as the idea behind Hydro Jetting is concerned, you can take it as a technology that use a high-pressure flow of water to remove the waste that gets clogged in the drain pipes preventing it to carrying waste away from your home. The water is blown into the pipes using a machine that removes everything that gets clogged in the drain. Remember, it is the latest technique that has eased the process of drain cleaning everywhere in Seattle and rest of the USA. Since it has been tried and tested by hundreds of satisfied customers, therefore you may not have any doubts in the utilities of the technique

Since the technology used in Hydro Jetting is yet to reach the common plumbing agencies, therefore the availability of the service is not that satisfying at the moment. Still, you must keep a few tips in your mind. Following are some of them

Hire an agency for Hydro Jetting Seattle on personal recommendations. Please ensure that these recommendations can make your task easier as you do not need to crosscheck the credibility of the service providers.

Hire an agency only if you find it a dependable one. You should look for their reputation online. Since most of the leading providers of the services are available online, therefore you may never find it difficult to search for the reviews of the services by common customers. Make sure you find the best reviews online at Google, Facebook, Twitter, and other such popular online platform.

Diversify Your Services: Selecting a Jetting Nozzle

Fast and efficient waterjetting is essential to maximizing profitability and the return on investment for the jetter. Yet many contractors fail to optimize jetting performance because they don’t understand the basics of two critical components: nozzles and tips.

Without the correct nozzles, a water jetter is like a Ferrari without wheels — all revved up but incapable of delivering peak performance. So far we’ve covered the kinds of jetters available (Diversify Your Services: Jetting Basics) and which ones best suit your needs (Diversify Your Services: Selecting a Water Jetter). It’s now time to explain the fundamentals of nozzles and tips.

Because the terms often are used interchangeably, it’s helpful to first define what they are. Nozzles are rotary tools that go on the end of the jetter hose and deliver water. The tips are small, replaceable inserts that screw into holes in the nozzle; the tips create the high-pressure streams of water that not only propel the nozzle along pipelines, but also cut roots and scour sludge and scale from pipes, says Mike Bollinger, sales director of the sewer division at StoneAge, a leading manufacturer of these tools.

For starters, tips are basically made from four different materials: stainless steel, carbide steel, ceramic and sapphire. Which one you should use depends on the work you do, Bollinger says. Sapphire tips, for example, are used predominantly for extremely high-pressure hydroblasting jobs (at 40,000 psi or more), such as cutting concrete, while stainless steel and carbide tips are most commonly used by municipal and commercial drain cleaners

Carbide steel and ceramic tips are best for contractors who use dirty, unfiltered water that’s propelled at high flow rates below 20,000 psi. Stainless steel tips can better tolerate rough handling, and require the use of clean water (filtered to 25 microns or better) at pressures of less than 20,000 psi, he says.

THIS IS WHAT YOU OUGHT TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING A DRAIN CLEANING SERVICE

Drains and sewer lines: every homeowner’s worst nightmare. They are that part of your home you never like to see or think about, but that once in a while demands your attention. As a homeowner, it is your responsibility to ensure that all parts of your house are adequately taken care of.

Keeping your drains and sewer lines clean is incredibly essential if you want to live in a healthy home. And it isn’t an easy task to accomplish. Hydrojet drain cleaning is an excellent way to get this done, and professional sewer cleaning companies could help you with this.

IS THE COMPANY LICENSED?

Before picking a drain cleaning company, it is vital to make sure that it has been licensed. Such companies have to be licensed, per the law. This also speaks volumes about the quality of service they offer. A registered company is likely to have experienced personnel since it is looking to compete favorably in the industry.

THE CHEMICALS THEY WILL USE

It is essential to consider what chemicals a cleaning company uses before hiring them. These companies use a good number of chemicals while doing their work, and some of these may be of questionable safety. When picking a hydrojet drain cleaning company, make sure that the chemicals they use to clean your drain and sewer are safe and non-toxic.

CONSIDER THEIR REPUTATION

When looking to hire a hydrojetting company, it is important to look them up on the internet. Scour through their websites and social media pages to get a picture of what reputation they have. This will help you see how the hydrojet cleaning company relates to its clients; you mustn’t overlook this.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HYDRO JETTING & SNAKING

When it comes to keeping your drains unclogged and your pipes clean, there are several options to choose from. Plumbers often use one of two solutions for clogs and pipe cleaning: plumbing snakes or hydro jetting. While plumbing snakes, or plumbing augers, are a more classic approach, hydro jetting offers an innovative solution for most pipe problems.

So what’s best for your situation? That depends on the problem! When a plunger just doesn’t cut it, you need something with a little more force to clear out a clog. That is when hydro jetting and snaking come into play. Each technique is useful for different types of clogs, so you want to make sure you have a qualified plumber handling your drain clog!

What are the main perks of this option?

Tried and true method – You know it works and does a solid job on most clogs because plumbers have been using it for decades.

Easy on the pipes – It is an undisruptive procedure for your pipes (but not the clogs), meaning if you have fragile pipes, this is a great option.

Tackles minor clogs easily – When there is just a minor clog to tackle, snaking can easily get the job done and give you back your drain.

Exposes plumbing dangers – Since a snake uses pressure to break through clogs, it can alert you to issues like tree roots in your pipes.

When Hydro Jetting Is the Way to Go

Tough clogs and buildup don’t stand a chance against the high-pressure hose used in hydro jetting. Just like it sounds, a hose with a special nozzle will send a powerful force of pressurized water through your pipes, clearing out your clogged drain and anything in its way. A plumber will usually create a cleanout, or opening, to allow the clog and buildup to be cleared out from the pipe

While hydro jetting is a great option in most cases, it can pack a powerful force. If you have older, more fragile pipes, the water pressure could cause damage in some areas. That is why it is always best to have a professional plumber on the job. They can scope out the state of your pipes and take down the pressure to prevent damage or other issues. If your pipes are too fragile, they can switch over to the good old fashion snaking method for optimal results.

How To Get Rid Of Silverfish In One Week

How to Protect Books & Papers From Silverfish

Silverfish are small insects, about 1/2-inch long, that are silver in color and have flat bodies. The three long “bristles” at the rear of their bodies and their two long antennae at the front make them easily recognizable. These critters love damp, warm places, so you’ll often see them in sinks, around plumbing fixtures, in closets, on bookshelves, in bathtubs and in attics and basements. Silverfish pose no threat to humans, but they are pests in the house. Silverfish can damage books and papers by eating small holes in them or by leaving light yellow stains.

Non-Chemical Protection

Eliminate the places silverfish like to live by removing sources of moisture. Check plumbing, eliminate leaks, and run your air conditioner or a dehumidifier to lower the level of humidity in the home. Do not store books or papers in humid areas of your home.

Silverfish like bookshelves and boxes with papers in them because they eat the glue that binds books and seals boxes. Vacuum bookshelves to remove silverfish. Attics where boxes of papers are often stored are also ideal habitats for silverfish. Vacuum often in these areas and store papers in airtight containers.

Silverfish like to consume foods such cereal, oats and flour, so keep these items in tightly enclosed containers. Keep your books and papers far from silverfish food sources.

Store books in plastic containers with tight lids, and place important papers inside sealed plastic bags before putting the papers in boxes for storage.

If you still see silverfish or the damage they cause (holes or stains in books or on papers, fabric or wallpaper), consider a chemical extermination of these pests.

Why they like it in your home

  • Plenty to eat. They tend to eat sugary substances called polysaccharides that are found in numerous household objects, such as book glue, carpet fibers, household glue, paint, fabrics, and even your furniture.
  • Places to hide. They leave their eggs, which look like white and yellow bulbs, in dark, moist, hidden areas of your home.
  • Moisture. Like many other household pests, they thrive in moist, humid environments.
  • Places to thrive. They can live up to 8 years and reproduce frequently throughout their lives. This is why they can be a huge nuisance and over time they can cause damage to household items.

How To Keep Silverfish From Eating Your Books

Silverfish are considered by many Portlanders to be one of the creepiest, most disgusting pests a home can have. They love darkness, humidity and sticking around in a home for a long, long time.

Control humidity. Like moths, silverfish love a humid environment. In fact, silverfish need a wet environment to survive. Properly ventilating attics, basements and bathrooms will help prevent the pests from making your home their home. A dehumidifier can be an invaluable tool for pest prevention and control.

Clean! One of the best ways to handle silverfish is to keep a clean house. Silverfish will eat a wide variety of things, including newspapers, linens and book glue, so try not to leave a silverfish smorgasbord lying around.

Fill entrance points. If they can’t get in, they won’t be a problem. Pay special attention to cracks or holes in walls and floors near pipes and drains – these are not only entrance points, but they can be used to deposit eggs.

Use light and heat. Like vampires, silverfish thrive in the dark. They also enjoy a regulated temperature between 70 and 80 degrees. If you can stand it, you should lower the temperature to about 60 degrees to assist with pest management. Portland residents are used to being chilly, after all. You can also use lights to force them into a more controlled environment.

How to Identify Silverfish

Silverfish are slender and lithe. They have a wide head and abdomen plus a narrow, pointed back end. They’re silvery gray, often shiny, and have six legs, which gives them a fragile and delicate appearance. Most people identify silverfish by their double antenna and three long appendages on the side of their bodies opposite their head. These three long appendages coming from the rear look like additional antennas.

Minus the antennas and appendages, silverfish are approximately one-half inch to one full inch in length. The antennas and tail can be nearly as long as the body itself. Altogether, some silverfish are nearly two inches long.

Silverfish are probably named for the shape and slenderness of their body, which gives them a fish-like appearance. To add to the effect, they have shiny scales covering the segments of their body.

Overall, silverfish have a flat body that they can easily hide under books and stacks of clutter. Unlike many insects, they have no wings. Their small legs can carry them very quickly, so they dash easily from one place to another. Some sources have described silverfish as tear-drop shaped. Their antennas can be very long, curved and flourished – similar in shape to a ponytail.

How to Help Prevent Silverfish

Silverfish are very common insects to have in the home. Unfortunately, getting rid of silverfish is a tough task. Their flat bodies and high speed make them adept hiders. And the fact that silverfish are nocturnal doesn’t make it any easier to spot them.

You don’t have to let silverfish damage your belongings. Here are several steps you can take to help make your home less attractive to silverfish:

  • Limit their food sources by keeping dry goods (think cereals, grains, pastas and beans) and pet foods in airtight containers.
  • Vacuum carpets, flooring and upholstery regularly to help remove fallen food crumbs.
  • Use dehumidifiers in damp areas (including basements) to help remove the moisture that silverfish tend to be attracted to.
  • Have dirt floors in crawl spaces or unfinished basements properly lined with plastic sheeting to help control moisture in the structure.
  • Have ridge vents properly installed in roofs to help let humidity escape.
  • Keep gutters clean and help ensure water drains away from your home.
  • Make sure the outside of your house is caulked and well painted.
  • Properly seal any open areas, such as seams between walls and ceilings and cracks under and behind baseboards, windows and trim.

What’s The Deal With Light Switches Installation

Must-Know Tips for Wiring Switches and Outlets Yourself

Buying a Dimmer Switch

Dimmer switches are available in many styles and configurations, including slides, knobs and touch-sensitive dimming mechanisms.

Don’t Reverse Hot and Neutral Wires

Connecting the black hot wire to the neutral terminal of an outlet creates the potential for a lethal shock. The trouble is that you may not realize the mistake until someone gets shocked, because lights and most other plug-in devices will still work; they just won’t work safely

Cutting Wires Too Short

Wires that are cut too short make wire connections difficult and—since you’re more likely to make poor connections—dangerous. Leave the wires long enough to protrude at least 3 in. from the box.

Be Positive the Power’s Off

When you’re doing electrical work, don’t assume that because you flicked a switch or flipped a circuit breaker the power is off—always double-check. Buy a noncontact voltage tester and check all the wires in the box before you do any work—or plan on some melted dental work!

Circuit-Finding Radio

Instead of running upstairs, let the Rolling Stones help you find the right breaker. Find circuit breakers by plugging a loud radio into the outlet you’re working on. You’ll know you have the right circuit breaker when the music dies. But don’t assume the electricity is off in all the other outlets or lights in the room. Before doing any wiring, plug the radio into other outlets you plan to work on. Some duplex outlets can have different circuits running to adjacent outlets. To be safe, test both the top and bottom with the radio. For lights, turn the light switch on and off to be sure.

Find an electrician the easy way

How much does it cost to have a light switch installed?

The good news is that it doesn’t cost a lot of have a light switch rewired or installed. While the total cost to rewire a house can be upwards of a few thousand dollars, getting a light switch installed by a licensed electrician should only cost around $200.

Laws around wiring a switch yourself

There are strict laws around what electrical work can and can’t be undertaken by someone without an electrician’s licence. While these laws vary from state to state, the basic parameters remain the same. In general, if you’re touching wires, that counts as electrical work, and you need to be licenced.

NSW fair trading says an electrical licence is required before any wiring work can be done. The definition of electrical wiring work includes  installing, repairing, altering, removing, or adding to an electrical installation, as well as the supervision of that work. In NSW, it’s an offence to do electrical work without a licence or certificate, and you can be fined $22,000 as an individual for doing unlicensed electrical work.

Worksafe Queensland advises that DIY electrical work, which includes wiring or re-wiring a switch, is regarded as unlicensed electrical work, which is illegal, with penalties of up to $40,000 for individuals. Additionally, any electrical work that exposes an individual to a risk of death or serious injury or illness attracts a maximum penalty of $600,000 for an individual ($3,000,000 for a corporation) or five years imprisonment.

How to change a light switch plate

If all you’re looking to do is to change up your dirty old light switch plates, you’re in luck! So long as you’re not changing any wiring, anyone is allowed to replace the plates over their switches.

How to install a smart light switch

Smart light switches allow you to remotely control your lights by voice command or with your smartphone. They have an advantage over smart bulbs because you can turn your existing lights and ceiling fans into smart devices. Once installed, you will turn your lights on and off effortlessly, leaving your hands free for more important matters

The installation process for a smart light switch can be tricky if you’ve never installed one before. We have done the research for you and put together this how-to list to make installing your smart light switch an easy task

How to install a smart light switch

Learn your existing wall switch and wiring setup. Before you purchase a smart light switch, you’ll need to figure out the type of switch you need. If the wall panel only has one switch, you need a single-gang. If it has two switches (maybe one switch for a light and one for a ceiling fan), you’ll need a two-gang smart light switch. If it has three switches, you’ll need a three-gang switch.

You also need to know what type of wiring you have. Turn off the power at the fuse box to avoid getting electrocuted. Then, open up the existing switch where you want to install your smart switch and examine the wiring. To open up the switch, unscrew the screws on the wall plate (they’re usually located on the top and bottom of the plate). Use a butter knife or flat-head screwdriver to pry the plate off of the wall, as it can stick in place (often because of paint). Then, unscrew the screws on the actual light switch and gently pull the switch forward.

Look at the wiring setup. Most smart light switches require a ground wire, an “in” wire, an “out” wire, and a neutral wire. Most homes have the in, out, and ground wires, but some homes built before the 1980s don’t have neutral wires. Typically, the neutral wire is a white wire (or group of white wires). If you don’t have a neutral wire, you can still install many smart light switches, but you’ll need to purchase a specific type of smart light switch that doesn’t require a neutral wire. For instance, the Lutron P-PKG1W-WH-R Smart Lighting Dimmer Switch will work without a neutral wire, but it does require its own bridge.

Is it necessary to replace both switches in a 3-way circuit with smart wireless switches?

On a set of switches for my outside lights, I replaced one of the 3-way switches with the HS210 and replaced the other with a manual 3-way switch with pilot lite. Both switches work fine. I can turn the lights on or off manually with either switch (as before replacing them). The pilot light on the manual switch appropriately lights only when the outside lights are on. No matter which switch I use to turn the lights on or off, the HS210 reflects the correct status on the switch and on the network within about a second of the change. In other words, it all just works.

The support page for the HS210 (3-way set) actually tells us that we can. I had to install mine in this scenario. Only one of my switches had a neutral wire. I left the switch without the neutral wire alone and only replaced the switch with the neutral wire. It works fine

P-Link makes the HS200 single pole switch that will not work with 3-Way switches. It has been mentioned that people have gotten the HS200 to work with 3-Way switches, but they have hacked them, which requires soldering electrical components to the circuit board. The issue is smart switches communicate with phone apps, the cloud, and other smart devices. These things need to know the current state of the switch (On or Off). When you have two switches in a 3-Way situation, both need to communicate with each other so each knows the on/off status. The HS200 does not have that capability. Until now there was only one smart switch company that made a companion switch for 3-Way situations, but it required an additional hub. I originally installed 6 HS200’s in my home. I went with TP-Link because of their reputation in the IT world and their smart devices do not require the use of an additional hub. The rest of my switches are 3-Way. I have been waiting for TP-Link to release the HS210 because I want all my switches to have the same look and feel

I found out accidentally that you do not. I was told by TP support that you did. I replaced 1 of my old switch with this one and tested if it would work manually with the 2nd old switch. And it did work. Next I replaced the 2nd old switch with this one. The problem I had was that in the 2nd box, there was no ground wire. I went ahead and wired in the 2nd switch and it would not work. The light would turn off and on. So I re-installed the 2nd old switch. I was going to re-install the 1st old switch, but then I thought I would try to activate the 1st new switch. It did activate via the kasa app. I tried it out and it did work both manually and via the kasa app. I located the 1st new switch on my echo and added it. So now the light works via manual switches and via kasa or alexa.

Switch Installation

This chapter describes how to install and connect a Catalyst 3650 switch. It also includes planning and cabling considerations for stacking switches.

Preparing for Installation

Ensure that the following sections are read and understood carefully before the switch is installed

Installation Guidelines

Before installing the switch, verify that these guidelines are met.

For the clearance to the front and rear panels, make sure that:

Front-panel indicators can be easily read.

Clearance is at least 4.4 in. (11.1 cm) from the switch’s rear panel.

Access to ports is sufficient for unrestricted cabling.

AC power cord can reach from the AC power outlet to the connector on the switch’s rear panel.

The SFP or SFP+ module minimum bend radius and connector length are met. See the corresponding SFP or SFP+ module documentation for more information.

Access to the rear of the rack is sufficient for connecting the optional Cisco RPS 2300 module.

For switches with the optional 1025-W power supply module (PWR-C2-1025WAC) or the 1100-W power supply module (PWR-C1-1100WAC), rack-mount the switch before installing the power supply module.

Choosing The Ideal Possum Trap

Possum Control: How To Trap Opossum

Opossum are frequently considered a nuisance in and around the garden, especially when they feed on or trample plants. They can also rummage through garbage cans or steal your pets’ food. How to get rid of an opossum can be tricky but with a little perseverance, the backyard possum may be convinced to move elsewhere.

Backyard Possum Control

The best way to combat opossum problems is to understand their habits. While they prefer wooded areas or open fields near streams, they will take up residence in abandoned burrows; tree crevices; brush piles; or areas beneath steps, decks, and outbuildings.

How to Get Rid of an Opossum

Opossum repellents. There are numerous products on the market targets at repelling these wild animals. However, these generally offer little relief. Other possum control methods include the use of motion-activated sprinkler systems, which can startle the creatures and frighten them off.

Traps. Trapping opossum is another common method employed for possum control. Knowing how to trap opossum isn’t as difficult as what to do with one once it’s caught. This normally requires relocation by an authorized (licensed) wildlife expert in most areas.

Killing these animals should only be a last resort, and is often not permitted in most states. Nonetheless, trapping them in a box or cage-like trap is fairly easy. Traps should measure about 10 by 12 by 32 inches. Set the traps along trails and known travel routes, bating them with fruit such as over ripe melons, grapes, or bananas

How to Get Rid of Oppossums?

Possums are excellent to have around the house. They clear out garbage, feed on harmful insects and have charming, rat-like tails. Not impressed? You’re not alone. While many people have an appreciation for wildlife, it’s best for wildlife to stay in the wild. Having possums lurk around your home in the middle of the night is not the most pleasant thought. So how do you get rid of possums that have become all too eager to call you neighbor? There are a few ways to solve this dilemma.

Regions and identification

The first step to opossum control is proper identification. The Virginia opossum is the only species found in the United States, although despite its name, it can be found in many other regions.

“The Virginia opossum (Dedeliphis virginiana) is North America’s only marsupial (“pouched”) mammal. It is found often very abundantly throughout the eastern and midwestern United States westward into Colorado and Texas. It is also found in the western coastal states of California, Oregon, and Washington and in the southern regions of British Columbia. It is not typically found in mountainous regions, in extreme deserts, or in the high northern sections of the United States.”

Disease

Your main reason for questioning how to get rid of possums may stem from a concern about disease. Many people fear that possums are rabid creatures. However, while possums do carry certain diseases, they appear to have a certain resistance to rabies. The Wildlife Rescue League states:

Benefit to ecosystem

It is important to get rid of possums that are causing havoc in your home, but not all possums are bad. According to the Wildlife Rescue League, “Opossums are excellent at rodent and insect control, and being carrion eaters, they help keep roadways and neighborhoods clean.”

How To Get Rid of Opossums & Tips on Possum Control

Possums are surprisingly beneficial animals to have around. They clear away garbage, eat pesky insects, and some people think they’re rather cute. However, that doesn’t include everyone, and many believe that these wild animals should stay wild. Having an opossum around the home isn’t a pleasant thought for every homeowner, and in this guide, readers will learn How to get rid of opossums in and around the home.

Identification

The first and most important step in possum control is identification. Although it’s known as the Virginia opossum, the animal is found in areas across the country. It’s America’s only marsupial, and it’s found throughout the midwestern and eastern US. It’s not normally found in the mountains, in the desert, or the high northern part of the country. Before deciding how to eliminate the problem, verify that a possum is the cause.

An adult opossum may range from 22 to 33 inches long, including a 10-12 inch tail. The animals weigh between four and 12 pounds, and males are typically bigger than females. Possums have coarse, long gray outer fur with a deep brown or black undercoat. They have five toes on each foot, and on the hind feet, the first toe is opposable and has no claw. Opossums have hairless, black, large ears, small and beady black eyes, and white, furry faces. Snouts are pointed and long, and their noses are pink and rather distinctive.

Diseases Spread by Opossums

A homeowner’s primary reason for learning How to keep opossums away may be due to concerns about disease. Many assume that possums carry rabies, but that’s not true. While the animals do carry some diseases, they seem to have a natural immunity to rabies. According to the Wildlife Rescue League, possums do not carry diseases typically found in cats and dogs, such as parvo, distemper, or feline hepatitis. Although any mammal may catch rabies, it’s quite rare in opossums; it’s thought to be due to a body temperature that’s too low to allow the rabies virus to multiply. Opossums do carry some other diseases that may be concerning to homeowners, children, and pets,

How Possums Benefit the Ecosystem

It’s crucial to get rid of opossums that cause trouble in and around the home, but not all of the animals are bad. According to information from the Wildlife Rescue League, possums are very adept at insect or rodent control, and because they eat carrion (dead meat), they keep neighborhoods and city streets clean. The League goes on to state that possums are more helpful as scavengers than harmful for the damage they can potentially cause. Neighborhoods with opossums are often much cleaner than those without them.

Possums

Possums live in the trees and occasionally come down to the ground to look for food. Brushtail Possums live in tree hollows and Ringtail Possums in the south of Australia build a nest out of sticks. Both kinds of possum may live in our roof if they can’t find suitable homes in trees.

Possums live in territories and mark the boundaries with smells. They rub the scent from glands under their chin, chest and base of tail against trees so everybody knows who’s the boss in the area. Possums protect their territories by fighting off intruders.

The body of a possum is made for life in the trees. They have strong, sharp claws, and hand-like back feet. The Ringtail Possum has a prehensile tail which acts like another hand to help it grip tree branches with ease. They can also use it to carry nesting material.

You can look after possums in your own backyard

Many of our possums are dependent on tree hollows. They need them to sleep in during the daylight hours. Competition from other possums, birds, bats and gliders along with the clearing of many old trees has reduced suitable hollows and possums often move in to the roof or walls of your home. They are not quiet – if you have a possum in your roof, you will soon know about it!

What is a backyard buddy?

Backyard buddies are the native animals that share our built-up areas, our beaches and waterways, our backyards and our parks. The possum is a backyard buddy. Backyard buddies are also the local people who value the living things around them, like possums, and are willing to protect and encourage them by doing a few simple things around their own homes

How To Get Rid of Opossums

Opossums are the only marsupials that live in North America. Like other marsupials, their young develop in an exterior pouch like kangaroos rather than inside a womb within a placenta.

They’re omnivores that will feed on almost anything. But because they have so successfully adapted to human environments, they can easily become nuisance animals in urban settings or even in neighborhoods where they forage through trash cans.

Physical Characteristics

All opossums range about 21 to 36 inches long, measured from nose to the tip of their tail. They’re similar in size to a cat or a small dog. Some of their more identifiable characteristics are their pointed head and pink nose, a long, hairless tail, and hairless, pointy ears. Their mouths contain 50 small, sharp, teeth. They also feature opposable thumbs on their hind feet.

Virginia Opossum

The Virginia Opossum is the only opossum species native to America, and it is the only variety known to cause problems in the U.S.

Common Opossum

The Common Opossum (also known as the Southern Opossum) prefers habitats near water like tropical forests, but will also be found close to people in urban areas.

The Cheapest Dentist Or Best Dentist In Your Area

How to Find a Good Dentist: The Ultimate Guide

Moving to a new area? Not happy with your current provider but you need to schedule a dentist today? Don’t settle for the first dentist you come across. You’re putting your finances and your health on the line. The only problem is that it’s easy to get lost when you see a myriad of dentists readily available to you

How to Find a Good Dentist: Start with the Basics

Learning how to pick a dentist starts by checking the ones closest to you. Choose one that’s near your home or your office, making it easy to visit if you use public transportation. Think of how you can get to it in case of emergency as well.

What Type of Dentist Do You Need?

Next, you also have to consider the type of dentist you want. Although a general dentist might refer to themselves as a cosmetic or family dentist, these are not official specialisations.

Ask for Recommendations from Friends and Family

Chances are, friends and family will happily suggest a good dentist that they are comfortable and satisfied with. Ask them specifics of what they like about their dentists to give you a better idea of their work

Look for a Member of an Organisation

If you are relocating to a new city, your current dentist may have a recommendation too. Dentists working within an association could know someone in the city you’re moving to.

TIPS FOR FINDING A DOCTOR OR DENTIST

When you have a rare disorder like ectodermal dysplasia, it’s not easy to find a doctor or dentist who has a lot of experience in treating the condition. Some may go their whole career and never see a patient with ectodermal dysplasia. The process can be frustrating and time-consuming for you. Consider working with a care provider who is willing to study and  learn about ectodermal dysplasia because they are interested in you and how to best care for you.

Check out one of our Dental Treatment Centers led by dental teams with experience in treating the ectodermal dysplasias.

Contact the closest University School of Dentistry or Medical Center for specialty care.

Contact us at the NFED office for a listing of care providers for your state. We can also assist you in locating a physician or dentist. We don’t recommend or endorse medical specialists, but we can assist you in finding medical and dental professionals in the U.S. recommended by NFED families or by other clinicians

Check out Gene Reviews, the National Organization for Rare Disorders, and Medscape Reference. Experts are often called upon to contribute to online publications such as these. Many of these resources list the author’s name and institution and may provide an e-mail address or phone number.

THINGS YOU MUST CONSIDER BEFORE CHOOSING YOUR DENTIST

Oral health plays a key role in your whole body health. And you know that to keep your teeth clean, fresh and strong, you need to visit a local dentist at least twice a year. These are no brainers. Yet, if you feel an office visit is a real burden, chances are you won’t make it to your local dentist as often as you should. That’s why finding the right local dentist is the first step to achieve a healthy and beautiful smile

Location (a.k.a find a local dentist)

It’s better to choose a dental office which is close to your home, or one that is on your way to or back from work. Traffic can be quite annoying and you may be late for your appointment due to distance or traffic issues. Also, before scheduling an appointment it is better to check the office hours. Choosing a dentist who is conveniently located becomes very important for dental emergencies or when you finally commit to going for check ups and cleanings on a regular basis.

Professional Experience

The most recommendable choice is to find the most friendly and experienced professionals in your area. You’re going to see them for a good number of years so you should choose a dentist (and a dental team) whom you get along with.

Insurance

One of the most dreaded questions we hear is: “Do you take my insurance?” Truth is dental insurance is not what it used to be. Its coverage and benefits have not kept up with healthcare inflation

Holistic Dentistry

First things first, holistic dentistry does not equal “wacky dentistry”. A holistic dentist is trained in both conventional and alternative approaches to dental care

tips for finding the perfect dentist

People sometimes underestimate the importance of good oral health in their lives and for their loved ones. Proper oral health improves quality of life, so it is important to choose the best dentist for your family.

Hold a job interview

Before you visit the dental office, angieslist.com recommends you interview potential dentists or dental practices: “Find out where the dentist graduated, how long they have been practicing and what type of dentistry they do, how many staff members work there and how long have they been with that dentist.”

Consider your wants and needs

If you have a busy job where it is difficult to schedule time away, you might want to consider a high-volume dental practice that can get you in and out quickly. Families have crazy schedules. If the dentist schedules evening and weekend appointments, that is a good indication the office understands and respects the importance of patients’ time. Ask about emergency visits. If you have a dental emergency on a Sunday, there should be an accommodation for that.

Ask for referrals

The American Dental Association suggests you seek recommendations from a trusted friend or relative. If your mom or neighbors raves about a dentist, find out what things they like. You can also ask your family doctor. You can even ask other dentists if there is someone they might recommend. Most are understanding if you want a dentist close to your home or one that works with your insurance network.

Check insurance and pricing

You want a dental practice that charges reasonable fees and also works with most dental insurers. The Consumer Guide to Dentistry says the office should be able to tell you the complete cost of procedures in advance, including what will be covered by insurance and what portion you must pay out of pocket. In some cases, dentists will also offer a discount if you pay in full at the time of your appointment.

Vital Tips On How To Find A Good Dentist

For those who want to get a dental exam after a few years with no check-up or people who have just moved into a new city, finding dentists may seem a bit difficult at first, but it’s not as hard as it sounds. However, choosing a good dentist can make the difference between rotting teeth and healthy gums and that is why people need to be very careful when choosing one. With that in mind, below this article will offer some tips on the things people need to keep in mind when choosing a dentist

Insurance company

One of the first things people should do when they want to find a new dentist is to call their insurance company. As for the number, it’s usually on the back of the insurance card. The advantage of choosing to go with a dentist within a certain network that is affiliated with one’s insurance company is that the individual is covered and at the same time he is also certain that the dentist is experienced and will do a great job. On the other hand, those who want to select a dentist outside their network should know that they’ll incur extra costs, because their policy may not cover them

Professional Qualifications

There is a lot to find out about the dentist’s training and qualifications when visiting his office. A good dental cabinet needs to have policies on infection control, while at the same time the staff should also be friendly. If the staff is reluctant when it comes to answering certain questions or if the individual is uncomfortable being around them, then it’s better to look for another dentist

Emergency care

Some people, depending on the dental problems they have, may require emergency care and that is why they need to see if the dentists Guelph offer such services. One thing to keep in mind is that a dentist should never refer his clients to a hospital emergency room, but give him his number to the client can call him directly

Office hours

Before choosing a dentist, people should also learn more about their office hours and if they have room for new appointments. In some cases, when clients cannot make it on time to the cabinet, the dentists Guelph may be willing to take them in the weekends, but that may involve an extra fee. Nevertheless, going with a dentist that works in the weekend is very much recommended for people who are too busy to honor their appointment during weekdays.

Tips To Choose Good Djs For Your Party

Tips To Pick Your DJ

Experience/Professionalism

One of the single most determining factors in the decision making process should be experience. You can plan every detail to the exact second, but no wedding occurs exactly as planned. There is a flow to weddings and an experienced DJ will make any change or delay appear like it was planned and rehearsed. In fact, a proactive DJ will anticipate common situations and prepare accordingly. You spent hours upon hours planning, scheduling and stressing about every single detail, the last thing you want is to do is spend your entire wedding worrying that something will be missed. A great DJ can put you at ease because he or she has all the necessary details and the ability to improvise should things change or fall behind.

Price

Deciding a budget for entertainment can be very challenging because prices can range anywhere from $300 to $3,000. Many DJ companies offer various pricing packages along with a la carte options, travel fees, and/or per hour add-ons. Similar to buying a car, you have to be aware of what the overall price will be after all the add-ons, extra time, additional audio system (for the ceremony, cocktail hour etc…), and additional fees

Meet with the DJ and make sure he or she will actually be you DJ

Make sure to meet with your DJ before you book. You want to get a feel for his/her personality and mannerisms. Especially if you want your DJ to also emcee the event, overall appearance and professionalism is key. You should feel comfortable having conversation during the consultation.

Personality/Emcee-ability

You need to make sure that the emcee you hire for your wedding fits the style of wedding your looking for. One of the best clues to discovering the right person is the first impression you get when you meet. Some DJ’s try to be too outgoing, over the top and end up sounding “cheesy”. Other DJ’s are more DJ’s than anything and have a hard time making announcements and speaking in front of large groups. A good DJ/Emcee will find a healthy balance between the two. For most weddings, the Bride and Groom just want their guests to have a great time so the DJ has to know how to use the microphone effectively.

Equipment

You can find a DJ with great personality, experience, talent, affordable prices, but it is imperative he or she uses the proper professional equipment. Beginning with the sound, professional speakers make all the difference in the world. Professional mics are also important. You don’t want microphone to cut in and out of signal because of insufficient range. There are also many different types of microphones for different applications. Make sure your DJ has the right type of mic for your event. A DJ should also have backup equipment in the event of technical difficulties

Essential DJ Hire Tips

Use personal experience or seek for good recommendations from trusted sources

Make use of the internet. Look for DJ companies with experience, recommendations and testimonials. Disco companies’ websites often contain videos, so you can see what the Disco will look like

Don’t always go for the cheapest option, you might get let down. When choosing a DJ go for skills, styles, quality, knowledge and experience. You want your Disco to look stunning and your DJ to be skilled. Your event is too important to just select on cheap price.

Look for a DJ Company with a large DJ roster. They will always have the right DJ to suit your party or event.

Make sure the DJ will be using top quality equipment and lighting. Sound and lighting is the most important factor for making your party a success.

Expert Tips And Questions To Ask Before Choosing A DJ

Dance the night away with a DJ you love!

DJs are arguably the most important part of a wedding — they connect strangers, they set the mood, and behind every great wedding reception photo is someone dancing to a song they put on.

Finding The Right Wedding DJ

There is a sea of wedding DJs, so where do you even begin to know where to start? The wrong DJ could be a catastrophe to an otherwise perfect day and you don’t want to end the night with an extremely awkward and painful reception that even an open bar couldn’t fix!

Calling Forth The One

Just as you’ll have your partner standing beside you on the big day, you’ll want the DJ on the other one! Finding that one DJ, the DJ that sets your heart on fire with music that pulls your soul straight from your body, that’s the one you want. So, how do you get it? With a little sprinkling of magic and good ol’ fashioned leg work!

Asking The Right Questions

After doing a little wedding DJ recon, make a list of the DJs you’re interested and grill em’! Here are some questions to get the interrogation underway!

Do a quick search – The internet is great for sorting the good from the bad. Not only will you get an idea of who you’d be working with, but you can cull through reviews and read what actual people are saying

CHOOSING THE RIGHT DJ

The most important day of your life is rapidly approaching. You have the best hall reserved, the perfect photographer, a wonderful wedding dress and sharp looking tuxedos picked out. What are you forgetting? Oh…that’s right, you need ENTERTAINMENT for the reception! NOT just a DJ.

With all the planning that goes into a wedding, it seems almost certain to overlook certain things, but GREAT entertainment should be one of the first things to secure when planning a reception. But how do you find outstanding entertainment for your special day? What should you ask? How much should you expect to spend? If you ask these questions, and follow these recommendations, you should have no problem finding a great DJ for your event

The best way to have a HORRIBLE reception is to call every DJ/MC  in the phone book, ask just their price, and hire the DJ with the lowest price. This happens more than it should, and a newlywed’s special day is ruined because they spent more on their cake than their entertainment.! It has been said that your entertainment is responsible for over 80% of the success of your entire wedding day.

A bride once stated: The ceremonies themselves are usually uneventful, so they have a tendency to blend together in the memory. What people REALLY remember is the reception, and a good reception guarantees people will look back on the occasion and say “THAT was a great wedding.”

There are a number of ways to find quality entertainment. The first, and probably the best way, is to hire someone you have seen at another reception where you were a guest. If the DJ did a great job, ask for their business card and hire them. The second is to ask friends or family members that have had great entertainment for their event. The third way is to call various Entertainment companies, or DJ companies, and find out which will do the best job for YOU! You want to find the right person, not the right price. Remember, there is a reason why QUALITY DJ’s charge more than AMATEUR DJ’s. Again, with these questions to ask, you should have no problems finding the best DJ for your reception.

All the Questions You Need to Ask Your Wedding Band or DJ

Let’s be honest here: The music can make or break a party, which means the band or DJ is one of the most important factors of your reception. And you definitely don’t want to hire someone without thoroughly vetting them first. Ask the below questions when you meet with any potential musicians to find the right fit for you.

how would you describe your style?

You need to figure out if their style will work with the vibe you’re going for. If you want an elegant cocktail party with lots of casual conversation, a band that describes itself as “rock and roll with a whole lotta edge” is a music mismatch. (And if you’re having trouble determining what kind of band or DJ you want, do some research on The Knot Marketplace or GigMasters—both can help you find exactly what you’re looking for.)

Can we come listen to you perform?

Seeing them perform live will give you the best idea about what your wedding entertainment would actually sound and feel like. While most musicians and the couples that hire them mutually agree in advance that the wedding is closed to prospective clients, some will have mini “concerts” for the public to attend and see whether they’re a good fit or not

Do you know our reception space and its acoustic, power and amplification requirements? If not, will you check it out beforehand?

Your musicians may need an extension cord, backup generator or other supplies, and it’s important to know this beforehand. If they don’t want to check out your venue, cross them off your list.

Can you play the songs that are important to us (such as a traditional Jewish hora tune or a favorite pop hit)?

The band or DJ should be able to play, learn or download any tune you’d like. If a band says “yes,” but they’ll need to learn and/or arrange it, ask them if they’ll charge for that.
